Maple Leafs name new head coach
Craig Berube. Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

The Toronto Maple Leafs already have a new head coach.

The Leafs fired Sheldon Keefe following their first-round playoff loss to the Boston Bruins. Fewer than two weeks later, they have hired their new head coach — Craig Berube.

Berube was a longtime player before later becoming a coach. He coached the Philadelphia Flyers for two seasons and then the St. Louis Blues for parts of six seasons. He was fired this season amid a 13-14-1 start with St. Louis.

Berube led the Blues to a Stanley Cup win in 2019 while serving as their interim head coach. His teams have made four playoff appearances.

The Leafs will be hoping that Berube helps them break through. Toronto has made the postseason eight years in a row, but they’ve only made it past the first round once (in 2023) during that span.

Toronto has run through some good coaches recently in Keefe and Mike Babcock. Making a deep playoff run will be what the Leafs are hoping to get from their new head coach.
